Gear Review - Ultimate Rod Case
Guide Ron Pecore offers his thoughts on his new 8 rod carrier from Ultimate Rod Case. For more information on this Colorado Springs company, visit www.ultimaterodcase.com.
I first learned about the Ultimate Rod Case during the Denver Fly Show & ISE last January. After meeting the owners Earl & Graham McCoy, my interest in this new product grew quickly. At the International Sportsmen’s Expo, I was able to get a closer look at the case. Robert (The Bug Guy) Younghanz had his case, featuring a fully custom paint job, featured at his booth.
Not only did these cases look cool, but the specs on this case really had me hooked. (Ed’s note: Specs below as listed on the URC website.)
- 16 gauge diamond plate aluminum pressed together, combined with 1/8″ aluminum angle creating the strongest, most protective rod case on the market.
- Stainless steel hinge and aluminum (outdoor specific) locks creating a rust free product.
- Holds 8 – 10′ fully assembled rods.
- Enclosed PVC rod tubes are hand packed and insulated creating double rod protection.
- Includes 8 exclusive rod protective sleeves creating total rod protection.
- Includes 1 security roof rack lock.
- Can be mounted on either side of your auto and on virtually any cross bars or ladder racks up to 9′ wide.
- Standard Black Power Coat finish.
Dimensions:
- Length – 10’2″
- Width – 17″

I made the decision to order an eight rod carrier. I was told my carrier would be ready in one week’s time. In fact, it was ready even sooner. I made the trip down to Colorado Springs where Earl and Graham helped to securely mount my new URC to the roof of my Tacoma. The solid, straight forward attachment, using all stainless hardware helps to ensure total piece of mind when you’ve got eight rods traveling on top of your roof. Not to mention, having a large aluminum case on the roof of your car is something you want to stay there when cruising at highway speeds. Rock solid, lightweight, and secure are words that describe the feel of the URC and the way in which it attaches to a fishing rig.
Having now used my eight rod carrier for nearly a full summer season of guiding, I have a few more thoughts to share.
First of all, I LOVE the seamless tubes. There are no ridges or gaps to snag connection knots or eyelets while sliding rods in and out. This is a big difference.
Being able to carry eight rods is also a game changer. When I’m switching watersheds or river systems on back to back days, I can pre-rig 8 different setups, 4 per river.
Road tripping with a few friends? Everyone gets to bring a nymph setup along with a streamer or dry rod too. With the other systems, I’d need two or three carriers to achieve what I can with one Ultimate Rod Case.
I have had no trouble with the locks, hinges, or mounts, after now having put thousands of miles on the road with my URC up top. Knowing the case is all aluminum and attached with fully stainless hardware makes rust and corrosion a non-issue for me.
The custom paint job options are limitless. My fellow guides have nicknamed my black & white setup, “The 8 Ball.”
I know other anglers with the four rod carrier, and they do like them as well. However, I’m completely sold on the eight rod system. It’s perfect for my needs and built right to boot. Check out all their models at www.ultimaterodcase.com, or give Earl or Graham a call at 719-649-0982.
Tight lines, rigged and ready!
