about Mind the redd

For future generations™

MIND THE REDD™ is a stewardship project designed to raise angler awareness about wild fish reproduction and encourage consideration for when to watch a step and hold a cast.

Through art, media, information, and community, Mind the Redd encourages discovery, discourse, and care to minimize angler impact upon wild fish reproduction.

MIND THE REDD

Mind The Redd encourages anglers to:

  1. Leave spawning fish be.
  2. See the redds and avoid them. Watch our steps. Redds are safe harbor for the next generation of wild fish.

Share the message. Create a movement.

#MINDTHEREDD

More and more people are angling along treasured streams, lakes, and oceans. As a global community of anglers, may we all work collectively to mind the redd, educate novice anglers about wild fish reproduction, and pass on a legacy of conservation and stewardship.

Wild fish are a gift. They will work to keep on giving, so long as we let them.

MIND THE
REDD™

History of Mind The Redd™

In 1969, LONDON UNDERGROUND coined the phrase “MIND THE GAP” as an audible and visual warning phrase purposed to raise cautious awareness among rail passengers. By minding the gap, alerted (and quickly educated) rail passengers would pay attention while crossing the unsafe measure between the subway train door and the station platform.

Untold number of passengers have heard “MIND THE GAP” before boarding their train, safely navigating the distance between train and platform, and safely arriving at their destination.

Coincidentally, the phrase “MIND THE GAP” is especially popular among tourists to the U.K. The phrase adorns stickers, apparel, coffee cups, hashtags and more.

What was once a pragmatic and functional suggestion of caution, has become a cultural hallmark.

What does all this have to do with fish?

In 2017 5280 Angler® coined the term, and turned the phrase, “MIND THE REDD™” as a pragmatic and functional way to raise cautious awareness among the angling comunity. By minding the redd, alerted (and quickly educated) anglers would pay attention when encountering both redds and spawning fish alike.

#MindTheRedd encourages anglers to consider the situation beyond the regulation.  To Mind the Redd is to show a respect, appreciation, and understanding for wild fish and their reproductive process. It is the polite reminder to consider when and where watch our steps and hold our casts. Through collective stewardship and ongoing “redducation,” our hope is that untold numbers of fish may continue to thrive for generations, without end.

5280 Angler collaborated with fly fishing artist NATE KARNES to turn the vision for this message into a reality. Nate’s art reflects a passion for trout, a knack for symbolism, and an enthusiastic and fun connection with anglers. He was the perfect choice to create the “ORIGINAL UNDERGROUND”  image for MIND THE REDD.

We hope that the message serves as a pragmatic and functional suggestion of caution, and also becomes a cultural hallmark.

The art and the message is timeless. We hope the same for wild fish.
